A few minutes before starting this blog, I registered for my first fundraising event, a 3-hour yoga class called Saluting the Spirit, to take place on June 5, 2011. Proceeds would go to three non-profit organizations – Pathways to Wellness (www.pathwaysboston.org), The Healthworks Foundation (www.healthworksfoundation.org), and Yoga HOPE (www.yogahope.org) - all committed to providing equal access to health and wellness programs to underserved populations. I had been thinking about this event for several years, but some schedule conflict or weak excuse held me back. The decision to partake this time stemmed from the realization that I had just completed my fifth year as a yogi.
From the first day I stepped onto a mat- March 18, 2006, to be precise- yoga has served as a sturdy anchor outside the four walls of the studio. During some of my most stressful moments- buying a home, unemployment, career changes, family money issues- the asana and pranayama practices have taught me the importance of stillness and focus, and instilled in me a deeper sense of humility and compassion. Yoga continues to be my guide as I work toward becoming a better citizen of this world.
While developing my list of potential donors for the event, I was reminded of all of the teachers who have enriched my life. I’m not simply referring to yoga teachers, but to every person who has taught me something about the art of living, the meaning of balance. Saluting the Spirit is my way of expressing gratitude for my greatest treasures- family, friends, and health, to name a few- and of providing hope for those who are in pain and misfortune. If yoga can be a catalyst for positive change, then I am more than happy to be one of its agents.
